The First Hawaiian Language Immersion School

Hawaii is known for its rich cultural heritage, and one important aspect of that heritage is the Hawaiian language. In order to preserve and promote the language, the first Hawaiian Language Immersion school was established. This school, Punana Leo, was founded with the goal of providing students with a full immersion experience in the Hawaiian language and culture.

Punana Leo, which means "Language Nest" in Hawaiian, follows the successful model of Maori Language Immersion schools in New Zealand. It was named after the Maori Language Immersion school called Kohanga Reo. Punana Leo has played a vital role in revitalizing the Hawaiian language and has helped to ensure that future generations of Hawaiians continue to speak and understand their native language.

Students at Punana Leo not only learn the Hawaiian language, but they also learn about Hawaiian history, traditions, and values.
