As a slave, Jeffrey had limited control over his own life. When Jeffrey was bought by a new master, he saw an opportunity to secure Dorcas' freedom as well. He begged his new master to buy Dorcas, and the master agreed as long as the price was reasonable. However, the next day, Dorcas was put up for sale along with her entire family. This meant that Jeffrey's master would have to pay for not only Dorcas but also her family members, which he found unreasonable. Unfortunately, Jeffrey's hopes of being united with Dorcas were shattered as they were forced to go their separate ways.
