When you are Forwarding-Bias a Diode with Digital VOM

Introduction to Forward-Biasing a Diode

A diode is a two-terminal electronic component that conducts current primarily in one direction. When a diode is forward-biased, it allows current to flow through it. To forward-bias a diode using a digital VOM (Volt-Ohm Meter), the correct placement of the test leads is crucial.

Placement of the Red Test Lead

When forward-biasing a diode with a digital VOM, the red test lead should be placed on the anode of the diode. The anode is the positive terminal of the diode.

Role of Black Test Lead

Conversely, the black test lead should be placed on the cathode of the diode. The cathode is the negative terminal of the diode. This configuration ensures that the diode is forward-biased correctly.

Expected Forward-Biased Resistance

When a diode is properly forward-biased, the resistance measured by the digital VOM should range from 1000 Ω to 10 MΩ. This range indicates that the diode is functioning correctly and allowing current to pass through in the forward direction.

By following these guidelines and correct test lead placements, you can accurately forward-bias a diode with a digital VOM and ensure its proper functionality.
